The first expansion to Napoleon and his Marshals expands the series to include the wars in Spain and Portugal from 1805-1815, with scenarios for 1807-1814, 1809-1814 and as part of larger campaign scenarios. The basic set (Napoleon and his Marshals) is required to play. The complete British army and navy for the basic game is added, along with the Spanish army, navy, and leaders and the Portuguese army. Other navies, such as the Russian, are also included. A 20.75 x 16 inch map of Spain, Portugal, Southern France and the adjacent seas is included along with two 88-counter sheets of 0.6" square game counters, printed front and back. Scale is approximately 38 miles per hex.

Among the new leaders added are Wellesley/Wellington, Beresford, Hill, and other commanders. Wellesley can undisrupt British forces after combat which gives him a resiliency unmatched by his peers. Beresford can train the Portuguese, converting them from militia to fighting units. Of course Nelson is included with the navy, along with less famous but highly effective Admirals like Collingwood, Saumarez, Pellew, and others.

Like its parent game, this is a diceless combat system, based on our algorithm for battles in that period. The gameplay is identical to that of Napoleon and his Marshals, with some minor modifications for the scenarios. Units are similar scale - about 5,000 men per factor which was roughly a division. Ship factors are two ships-of-the-line for each naval factor. 

Rules are the same as for Napoleon and his Marshals which you must have to play.

We've added the "Leader Boards" for Napoleon and his Marshals. These facilitate the Limited Intelligence rules and make game play on the map easier by eliminating big stacks.

To use the Leader Boards, lay them out near the maps in a convenient place. Place the Leader on the map. Then place all his subordinates and army (or naval) factors in the box with the Leader's name.

The precedence for which leader counter to use on the map should be:

1. the National Military Leader;

2. Army Commander

3. Corps Commander with best Combat Value Stat

The other players are permitted to look at the top unit of each stack on the Leader Board, and to see the size of the units there. So, players will have a rough idea of what is present. You should use the same "precedence" rules for what you show in a stack on the Leader Board. If there are no leaders in the stack, place the largest combat unit on top.

We're pretty proud of our game Fighting the Islamic State, released back in late 2015 well before the events occuring there today (the recapture of Mosul and the imminent fall of Al Raqqah, as well as US-Russian hostilities) had happened. The rules have held up well. But the Kurds have been allowed a longer leash than we originally predicted, so a rules change is in order:

1. Kurdish units in Syria are not required to remain adjacent to their home areas when entering areas marked on the map with an ISIS faction symbol.

 

Designer Note. In the Spring of 2017, Kurdish units began moving on Al Raqqah, the "capital" of ISIS.  The game's rules had previously restricted the Kurds to their own purple areas, or adjacent. 

I bet I'm the only wargame publisher that ever had a game that set off government red flags. (UPDATE: Turns out I'm not and I'm in some pretty good company! But the problem described herein has now been fixed. Thanks for your patience!)

Thanks to those of you trying to buy our game Fighting the Islamic State.  What's happened recently is that Paypal started denying payment for some of you. I finally got Paypal to tell me why, at least indirectly.

Previously, Paypal reps would just say that customer payment was denied due to "government regulations." I worked in DC for 18 years. I know about regulations. So I said, which one? "We're not allowed to say."

So I worked my way up the chain until a clever guy said "You should change the name of that one when somebody orders it" meaning FTIS. He then told me about a group that is trying to collect money to help the Kurds fight the terrorists, but that Paypal isn't allowed to process payments for them. A light went on....  I said, "I get it. It's the name of my game and the fact that money is exchanging hands."

I made sure he understood who we are and why we published that game. Luckily he knew about wargames already.

So we'll be making a couple of changes in the name of the game, at least as it goes to Paypal, so we can quit alarming our friends in national security.

Hopefully, that will fix it.
